GC Labs Completed KOFIH Dr. Lee Jong-wook Fellowship Program - Infectious Disease Specialists Course 2025-11-17

▶ The course, part of KOFIH-led ODA projects, imparts on disease diagnosis and infectious disease response to fellows from Africa and Asia


GC Labs (President Sang Gon Lee) has announced that Korea University-GC Labs Consortium successfully completed the 2025 ‘Dr. Lee Jong-wook Fellowship Program - Training Course for Infectious Disease Specialists,’ organized by Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH), on the October 17.

 

The Dr. Lee Jong-wook Fellowship Program is a training program that invites healthcare professionals from partner countries to South Korea to honor the commitment to train the healthcare workforce of the late Dr. Lee Jong-wook, the 6th WHO Director-General.

 

From 2025 to 2027, the Korea University-GC Labs Consortium Team will operate the ‘Dr. Lee Jong-wook Fellowship Program Training Course for Infectious Disease Specialists,’ covering Epidemiology, Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment, and Diagnosis and Research. GC Labs is responsible for delivering the advanced course in Diagnosis and Research.

 

As part of the 2025 Dr. Lee Jong-wook Fellowship Program, 31 Infectious disease specialists from 9 countries across Asia and Africa participated in the course. They completed a two-week common course in August, followed by a seven-week advanced course, strengthening their capabilities in infectious disease response and research.

 

GC Labs conducted a seven-week advanced course in Diagnosis and Research starting in September as a part of the ‘Dr. Lee Jong-wook Fellowship Program Training Course for Infectious Disease Specialists’. The course provided theoretical and practical sessions covering the entire spectrum of infectious disease diagnosis for 9 healthcare professionals from 7 partner countries: Ghana, Malawi, Vietnam, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Tanzania, Cambodia. The fellows gained valuable insights from Korean case studies, and further enhanced their capacities in infectious disease response through study visits to key institutions. These included the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), Infectious Diseases Control Division of Seoul Metropolitan Government, National Medical Center, Jeonbuk state institute of health & environment research, International Vaccine Institute (IVI), and Jeonju Public Health Center.

During the congratulatory speech at the closing ceremony, Professor Sung Bom Pyun, Dean of Korea University College of Medicine, said “This course carries forward the late Dr. Lee Jong-wook’s belief in ‘Health for All’.
